You ended it - and the guilt won't let up?

Being the one who left doesn't mean you don't get to grieve. Both things can be true.

What's going on

People often assume the one who leaves has it easy. In reality, leavers carry a different kind of pain: guilt for hurting someone, grief for what was good, and second-guessing every time they feel lonely.

Guilt doesn't mean the decision was wrong. It means you care about the person you hurt. Loneliness doesn't mean it was wrong either - it means you lost something, even if you chose to.

Try this in the next hour

  1. Write down the reasons you ended it, while you're calm. Read them on the days you doubt yourself.

  2. Notice the difference between 'I miss them' and 'I made the wrong choice'. They're not the same.

  3. Don't take on the job of comforting your ex through their pain. It keeps you both stuck.

  4. Let yourself grieve openly. You don't need to earn sadness by being the one who was left.

What usually makes it worse

Reaching out to check they're okay. It comes from kindness, but it often reopens hope for them and guilt for you.

Questions people ask in this moment

Is it normal to feel sad after ending a relationship?

Completely. Ending a relationship is still a loss. Sadness after a hard decision is part of grief, not evidence that you got it wrong.

How do I know if I made a mistake?

Look at whether the reasons you left have changed, not just how you feel on a lonely night. If the reasons still stand, the doubt is more likely grief than a sign.

If you're thinking about hurting yourself or you're not safe, please contact local emergency services or see our crisis resources first.
