Can't stop checking their Instagram?
Every check promises relief and delivers a new thing to think about. You can break the loop without pretending you don't care.

What's going on
Checking works like a slot machine. Most of the time there's nothing, sometimes there's something that stings, and occasionally there's something that feels like a clue. That unpredictability is exactly what makes it so hard to stop - your brain keeps pulling the lever in case this is the time it pays out.
The posts themselves are curated and usually tell you very little about how they actually feel. But every check reopens the wound a little and keeps them at the centre of your day. Stopping isn't about not caring. It's about taking back the hours the loop is eating.
Try this in the next hour
Make it slower, not forbidden: mute their stories and posts, log out of the app on your phone, or move it off your home screen.
Notice the moment right before you check - bored, lonely, in bed, after a drink. Plan one different thing for that exact moment.
When you feel the pull, wait five minutes and write down what you're hoping to find. Seeing it in words often makes the hope obvious.
If they post something and you've already seen it, don't go looking for who liked it. That's where an evening disappears.
What usually makes it worse
Using a second account or a friend's phone to keep checking 'without them knowing'. It keeps you in the loop and usually adds a layer of shame on top.

Questions people ask in this moment
Should I block or mute my ex?
Muting is quieter and easy to reverse; blocking is a firmer wall. Choose based on what actually stops you checking, not on what message it sends them. If you keep un-muting, a stronger barrier is kinder to you.
Can they see that I viewed their story?
On most platforms, yes - story viewers are visible to the poster. That's one more reason to mute their stories if you're trying to step back.
If you're thinking about hurting yourself or you're not safe, please contact local emergency services or see our crisis resources first.
