What's going on

A message after a long silence can undo weeks of steadiness in a few seconds. It's natural to start decoding every word - why now, what does 'hey' mean, are they lonely, do they regret it. The truth is you can't know their reasons from a text, and they might not fully know them either.

What you can know is what you want and what the last months have taught you. A message is an invitation, not an obligation. You get to respond on your timeline, or not at all.

Try this in the next hour

  1. Don't reply in the first hour. Nothing about this needs an instant answer.

  2. Write down how you've felt over the last month without them - honestly, including the good days.

  3. Ask what a reply would open: a quick catch-up, an old pattern, or a real conversation you're ready for?

  4. If you do reply, keep it short and decide in advance how far you're willing to let the conversation go.

What usually makes it worse

Reading the message as a sign they want you back and replying from that hope. Plenty of 'hey stranger' texts are boredom, nostalgia, or a lonely evening on their side.

Questions people ask in this moment

Does my ex texting me mean they want to get back together?

Not necessarily. People reach out for many reasons - guilt, loneliness, curiosity, a memory, or wanting reassurance that you're still there. If they want something real, it will be clear in more than one text and in how they act over time.

Is it rude not to reply?

After a breakup, protecting your peace isn't rude. If you want to close it kindly, a short line like 'I hope you're well - I'm keeping my distance for now' is enough.

If you're thinking about hurting yourself or you're not safe, please contact local emergency services or see our crisis resources first.
