Talk through what friendship would actually look like week to week
Right now
They want to 'stay friends'?
It can sound kind and still hurt. You're allowed to say 'not right now' - even to someone you care about.

What's going on
'Let's stay friends' can come from a real place - they care, they don't want to lose you entirely. It can also be a way of easing their own guilt or keeping a door open. Either way, it often lands as a mixed message: close enough to hope, too far to have what you wanted.
Friendship after a breakup is possible for some people, but rarely straight away. It usually needs a stretch of real distance first, until seeing them doesn't come with a quiet wish that it'll turn back into something more.
Try this in the next hour
Ask yourself honestly: if we were 'just friends', would I be hoping for more? If yes, it's not friendship yet.
Imagine them telling you, as a friend, about someone new they're seeing. Your reaction is your answer for now.
You can say 'I'd like that one day, but I need space first' - it's honest and doesn't burn anything down.
Decide what space means in practice: no texting, no casual meet-ups, muted on social media for a while.
What usually makes it worse
Agreeing to friendship so you don't lose them completely. It often turns into waiting in a role that keeps the wound open.

Questions people ask in this moment
Can exes ever really be friends?
Some can, usually after time apart and once both people have genuinely moved on. Trying to be friends immediately tends to keep at least one person stuck.
Will saying no ruin any chance of friendship later?
Not usually. Asking for space now is often what makes a real friendship possible later, if you both still want it.
