Your ex will be there tonight?

Shared friends don't disappear after a breakup. With a plan, you can go - or decide not to - on your own terms.

What's going on

Seeing an ex in a shared social space is hard because you're doing two things at once: trying to have a normal night, and managing a flood of feelings in front of people who know you both. It's completely reasonable to feel anxious about it days ahead.

You don't have to perform being 'over it'. The goal is just to get through the evening in a way you'll feel okay about tomorrow - which might mean going, going for an hour, or skipping this one.

Try this in the next hour

  1. Decide in advance how long you'll stay and how you'll get home. An exit plan makes it easier to stay.

  2. Bring or arrange to meet one friend who knows the situation and can be your anchor.

  3. Plan a short, neutral line if you end up face to face: 'Hey, hope you're doing okay.' Then you're free to move on.

  4. Go easy on alcohol. It's the fastest route from 'I'm fine' to a conversation you regret.

What usually makes it worse

Using the night to have 'the talk' you never got. A party is the worst possible place for it, and an audience makes it harder for both of you.

Questions people ask in this moment

Should I just skip it?

Sometimes, yes - especially early on. Skipping one event isn't avoidance forever. If it's a friendship you care about, you can explain to the host and see them another time.

What if they bring someone new?

Decide now what you'll do if that happens - step outside, find your friend, or head home. Having the plan means you won't have to make the decision in the moment.

If you're thinking about hurting yourself or you're not safe, please contact local emergency services or see our crisis resources first.
