Saw them with someone new?

What's going on

Seeing your ex with someone else can make a breakup feel brand new again. It turns 'it's over' from an idea into a picture, and your brain immediately starts filling in a story: they're happier, it was easy for them, you were replaceable.

That story is built from a few seconds or a single photo. You don't know how they feel, how serious it is, or what they're carrying. What you do know is that it hurts - and that hurt deserves care, not more evidence.

Try this in the next hour

  1. Don't go looking for more. Not the new person's profile, not their mutual friends, not old photos for comparison.

  2. Name the story your brain is telling, out loud or written down. Then write what you actually know - usually it's much less.

  3. Get your body moving or somewhere with other people for an hour. This kind of shock needs somewhere to go.

  4. Tell one person you trust what happened. Saying it out loud shrinks it.

What usually makes it worse

Comparing yourself to the new person. It's a contest with no rules you can win, and it turns their choices into a judgement on you.

Questions people ask in this moment

Does it mean they never cared about me?

No. People move into new relationships for lots of reasons - including avoiding their own grief. How fast someone appears to move on says very little about what the relationship meant.

Is it a rebound?

Maybe, maybe not, and you probably can't tell from the outside. Trying to work it out tends to keep you focused on them instead of on getting through your own day.

If you're thinking about hurting yourself or you're not safe, please contact local emergency services or see our crisis resources first.
